ASV Travel Awards

Travel Award Submission Now Open –>  ASV Travel Application

The ASV is invested in the success of our trainees, and one way we demonstrate this is through our travel awards program. For the 2019 meeting, the ASV donated $145,000 for 258 travel awards to students, postdoctoral associates, teachers, and global scholars. The application details for the following three programs are described below.

  • Global Virology Scholar Travel Award – deadline January 13, 2020
  • Student and Postdoc Travel Award – deadline February 3, 2020
  • Undergraduate Teacher Travel Award – deadline February 3, 2020

All applications for ASV travel support must be submitted electronically online through your ASV membership account at the link provided (here). Students, postdocs, and Global Virology Scholars must first complete the online abstract submission to receive a Confirmation Number that must be included on the travel award application.

Global Virology Scholar Travel Award – January 13, 2020 deadline
The ASV supports travel for several Global Virology Scholars to the annual ASV meeting with awards covering up to $2,500 in expenses. Applicants must submit an abstract as the presenting author at the annual meeting, but need not be an ASV member. The Travel Award Committee will review applications and make the selections.The deadline for Global Virology Scholar applications is 11:59 p.m. (EST) Monday, January 13, 2020.

Student and Postdoctoral Associate Travel Awards – February 3, 2020 deadline
Only students and postdoctoral fellows who are the presenting authors on the abstract and who are current ASV members (dues paid for 2020) or have applied for membership by January 31, 2020 are eligible to apply for a travel award. In addition, ASV will give a small number of travel awards to undergraduate students. Applicants must be sponsored by a current (dues paid for 2020) full member of ASV to ensure the work is ready for presentation, but note that the sponsor does not have to be a co-author on the abstract they sponsor. Please be sure that you have obtained permission prior to listing a sponsor and review your application carefully before submitting. Incomplete applications will not be reviewed or considered for funding by the ASV Graduate Student and Postdoctoral Fellow Travel Award Committee.

Undergraduate Teacher Travel Award – February 3, 2020 deadline
Teachers of undergraduate virology students submitting Undergraduate Teacher Travel Award applications are exempt from the abstract submission and full member nomination requirements. Teachers who have received awards in the past do remain eligible for another award.

All travel award applicants will be notified of their award result in early March by email from the ASV Secretary-Treasurer’s office. If a notice is not received by then, please contact the ASV Secretary-Treasurer’s office by email at
